If you’re newlywed or you’ve moved in with your significant other after living on your own for a period of time, you’ve undoubtedly taken a major, life-changing decision.
Great, congratulations, there’s a lot of life to look forward to.
But in taking a conscious decision to get together with your partner, there might be one major change that you haven’t thought of, one that is nevertheless just about to have a massive impact on your life.
So far, you and your new partner have been collecting a lot of the same ‘stuff’ and there are therefore likely to be plenty of ‘duplicates’. If so, you need to do something about it.
Start by looking around your respective homes before you move in together and you’ll soon realize that you’ve both got at least one of everything! It’s even possible that you have several of each item and you don’t need them.
More relevantly, you have no space for them either.
As an example, bring two coolers each and you’ve got four! Unless you’ve moved into a very large place, where are you going to put them?
Then you have the question of styles. Everyone has their own taste and style and it’s unlikely that you’ll both be the same right across the board.
Thus, unless one partner decides to keep all their furniture, fixtures and fittings (which is a recipe for a massive dispute in itself), there’s going to be compromises made plus some mixing and matching.
Fortunately, elements of your respective ‘collections’ will work together and remember, what works is all down to personal taste. If you want to mix two items in the same space that look good to both of you, do it, it’s your space!
The thing is that there are no hard and fast rules here. If it suits your joint tastes and styles, well, why not?
Another factor that I’d definitely be taking into account is the age and state of the items in question.
If you have one old sofa that is beaten almost to breaking point and one newer one that you both like, the newer one could be the best ‘keeper’ although again, there’s no hard and fast rule. Even a tatty old sofa can be re-covered or ‘saved’ with the addition of colorful throws and cushions.
