Modern Interior Design Explained and Examined

Modern interior design ideas have an important role to play in the portfolio of every professional designer and as you would expect, the concept of what ‘modern interior design’ actually is also very familiar to the designers at Curtain Call Interiors.

For many people however; the concept is difficult to grasp or understand, and therefore they question the value of modern interior design ideas.

In this article, I’ll expand on what modern interior design really is and I’ll highlight the good and bad points that are typically associated with it.

If there is one single idea that encapsulates modern interior design, it is ‘minimalism’ because keeping everything simple, basic and – well – minimal lies at the heart of this style of design.

The problem with a lot of modern design projects – especially ‘do-it-yourself’ projects that home owners carry through themselves – is that the urge to be a minimalist drives every design decision they make.

They’d rather buy something that looks modern and sparse just because it does, instead of thinking about it in the context of the overall design of their home as they should.

For instance, they buy a chair because it’s stark black leather and aluminum (i.e. minimalist) without considering whether it matches the rest of the room that it will stand in. By continuing with this ‘modern interior design at all costs’ approach, they end up living in a strangely mismatched but nevertheless cold, austere environment.

Modern or more traditional good interior design is all about achieving a balance. It’s about striking the right balance between beauty and practicality, the balance between function and design.

If you adopt this balanced approach to modern interior design, there is no reason why modern design cannot work every bit as effectively as more traditional formats.

Here are some other modern interior design factors to consider:

  • When selecting your color scheme, it has to look ‘cool’. It doesn’t necessarily need to be brilliant white as this can be a little cold but lighter colors do have a cooler presence nevertheless.
  • Forget lavish, colorful decorations or displays. They’d contrast with your modern minimalist approach, but too much so! You’d end up with a ‘mix ‘n’ match’ design that’s not one style or the other.
  • Finally, think about the texture of the room. Rough, knobbly textures are warm, friendly and inviting which is not what modern interior design is usually about. For this reason, fabrics should be smooth, silky and a little intimidating.
